This led to an ability to read people and try to figure out what they wanted from me- so they would like me. In and of itself this learned behavior might seem innocent enough, but it took me down a road of people pleasing and loss of identity. Had I followed this path to its end, the possibility of walking away from Christ and choosing a life without Him was a very real one.
I think that many girls (and by girls I mean women too!) struggle with feelings of isolation and awkwardness as well as difficulty "fitting in." The solution to this is one I wish I had discovered long ago- and one I am passionate about when I minister to girls.
Here it is. Are you ready? It's deep. Profound. Intense. Ok....
You are not SUPPOSED to fit in!
There. Wow. Do you feel better?
Probably not. Let me explain.
You are UNIQUE. You should never be "just like her over there." And that's because your Creator designed and hand crafted you in such a way that you are not like anyone else.
It gets better.
He gave you GIFTS that He did not give anyone else- you are a one of a kind combination of personality, tendencies and talents that nobody else has! And (even better!) His perfect plan is for you to use your own "you-ness" to shine His light in a dark world of "fit in-ness."
AND (it keeps getting better!) your "you-ness" is needed to "fit in" with OTHER Christ followers to work as a team to attract hurting people to Jesus.
So- you don't fit in? Celebrate! Embrace your quirkiness, your awesomeness, your gifts, your looks, your abilities. Whatever you do, don't hide who God created you to be. Don't change to please others, to look or act like them, to blend in. Be who you are for Him!
